Description

Online video is transforming the media sector. Innovation and take-up are accelerating. The variety of services is increasing. This concerns the content itself, the service provisioning and the underlying business models. Examples of online video services are YouTube, Hulu, Apple TV and the online services that are provided by BBC, MTV and other public and private broadcasters. The online availability of news programmes and TV shows turned out to be a first step towards online drama series, music programmes, films, sports and niche content. User Generated Content cuts across all genres, from home-made music clips to civil journalism and amateur drama that is shot in Ikea stores. Online video services can be free or paid, available on-demand or streaming, provided by non-profit or commercial players. For some players, online video is the heart of the business model. For others, online video is a means to support other media activities (e.g. offline and online newspapers) or a means to promote non-media activities (e.g. electronic commerce). Most services are widely available via the internet. Users that prefer to watch audiovisual services on TV can choose between several solutions to link the PC to the TV-set. The user friendliness of these solutions increases with the Internet connected TV sets. A number of services are only available via specific end user devices provided by Apple, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, etc. To some extent, this business model is triggered by piracy. The devices mentioned allow for relatively controlled online video services, as one of many responses to illegal Peer-To-Peer websites and illegal content on legitimate websites.
